Although artificial intelligence companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic are leasing millions of square feet in New York City within the context of a massive venture capital ecosystem, New Jersey is quietly flexing its muscles in the AI arena, with indications that the Garden State will likely emerge as a key AI leader as it continues to flourish in other innovative realms.
Part of New Jersey’s merit arguably rests with its established biopharmaceutical companies as well as its advanced manufacturing firms, smart infrastructure, and logistics and transportation sectors. Its highly educated workforce and proximity to major cities have likewise long been noted for contributing to the state’s success.
More recent advantageous components include 12 state-designated Strategic Innovation
Centers (SICs) - physical locations that promote research across numerous sectors by
synergistically uniting startup companies, investors and universities via laboratories and related elements.
Speaking broadly about innovation in New Jersey is Liat Krawczyk, executive director of the NJ AI Hub, a new 6,500-square-foot SIC located in West Windsor that is fueled by both public and private partners.
She tells Jersey Tech + Innovation that all the SICs are “a particularly powerful muscle for being able to bring to the surface the kinds of partnerships that are needed for innovation” in tandem with the cross-institutional sectors that are part of these “public-private academic partnerships.” She notes that the SICs are geographically dispersed throughout New Jersey, reaching different constituents and decisionmakers.
Krawczyk also says, “[This is all] really unique. I don’t think I’ve seen other states do it with this much intention, and in a state that’s as small and as dense as New Jersey, these public-private muscles will unlock the innovation that is currently deeper within the sectors.”

Fruitions for AI
In the realm of AI specifically, Microsoft and cloud computing company CoreWeave - in
partnership with Princeton University as well as the New Jersey Economic Development
Authority (NJEDA) – are facilitating the aforementioned NJ AI Hub through a $20 million fund for AI startups; a $72 million launch partnership; and a $25 million investment in an AI supercomputer. The NJ AI Hub is serving as an overall nexus for AI startups, AI research,
acceleration, workforce training, and related AI endeavors.
The hub has multiple pillars including, but not limited to, bringing high-performance computing capacity to the state; leveraging R&D tools such as Microsoft Discovery; and advancing innovation and commercialization. The latter includes startup companies operating in a Plug and Play brand accelerator within the hub (pre-seed Series C with no equity taken up front).
Krawczyk says it’s about “instigating the flywheel of AI innovation across different stages of a company.”
Other New Jersey AI Hub efforts focus, again, on the various aspects of understanding and then educating the workforce, and, separately, hosting events exploring everything ranging from the future of AI in advertising to AI training and human networking. Among other features, the hub also includes a co-working space.

Corey Sanders
Corey Sanders is the senior vice president of product and strategy at CoreWeave, the key AI cloud provider company that is, again, a founding partner of the NJ AI Hub.
During a recent podcast with Jersey Tech + Innovation Founder James Barrood, Sanders said, “The NJ AI Hub has actually become a model.”
Sanders explained that when people ask about how communities can be engaged, “We always point to the NJ AI Hub as a good example of something where you’ve got public-private coming together in this three-way [scenario], with government involved as well. We use it as the example of where that can really drive innovation.”
Additional Factors
Even with AI significant investments being made in New Jersey, venture capital here remains a noted challenge when compared to competing states such as New York or Massachusetts.
That said, a massive overall New Jersey AI landscape has nonetheless been created against the backdrop of a state already deeply immersed with many aspects of technology - especially in the biopharmaceutical realm where AI is slated to facilitate drug discovery, optimize clinical trials, and improve manufacturing operations.
New Jersey’s workforce is also competitive. Krawczyk says, “I actually think human capital is extremely strong in New Jersey. There’s a lot of senior-level talent that lives here but doesn’t always work here. And the question is: How do we get people who are living here to come out and proactively be part of the innovation ecosystems and see themselves as part of New Jersey, as an identity?”
Conclusion
All told, New Jersey is expanding its history of innovation via widely heralded investments in an emerging era of artificial intelligence, creating a unique footprint that cannot be ignored and appears poised for burgeoning success.
Krawczyk concludes, “If we if we get this right, New Jersey can really become a model for how you do responsible AI deployment, how you scale it, and how you meet this balance of … creating adoption in order for there to be more opportunities, and to avoiding the risks of [worker] displacement.”
